The ancient „Campi Castle“ is situated in the Castoriana Valley, between the cities Norcia and Preci.
The Valley in which flows the River Campiano, offers numerous historical and archaeological witnesses of the past. Campi has three different descriptions: “The city”, “Campi Alto” (High Campi – on the mountain) and “Campi Basso” (Lower Campi – on the base of the mountain).
The City (according to a document from the year 1115) was founded around the church of S. Salvatore and shows the ancient lost part called “Campless” which was mentioned already by Gregor the Great.
“Campi Alto” and “Campi Basso” repeat the scheme of a castle-city which is typical for the Valnerina Valley.
The origin of “Campi Alto” goes back to the 13th century, when the mountain was caved in 1288 to built the city surrounded by a castle stone wall which is almost completely preserved.
The castle’s entrance in the east that leads on the main square is still intact. The major square has a stone wall on the one side from which a fountain with fresh mountain water was created.
The Church of S.Andres, the Church of Virgin Mary and the Church of S.Salvatore are historical must-sees in Campi. The name “Campi” comes from the Latin word “Campivus” which means “field”.
